Day: 24 Gastritis & Ulcers
A few days ago I posted about health and how important it is. I shared that dear people in my life were experiencing health challenges- some explained with a course of action in place, others unexplained and scary. Well, sadly I have joined this category! A few years ago I was diagnosed with Gastritis (sexy name, huh?) which means inflammation of the stomach lining. I also have Gall Stones -- which are not like kidney stones -- you don't "pass" them you have to have your gallbladder removed if you have on going problems. But back to the tummy. My body does not break down acid as perfectly as it should causing acidic build up which causes an inflamed stomach lining resulting in doubled over abdominal pain. Contrary to popular belief it is not related to diet or stress, it's just how my body breaks down certain enzymes and there is no warning when an outbreak will hit.
Today I had my third Endoscopy to take a look at what is going on and to determine if in fact the inflammation is what's causing my pain. An endoscopy is when you are fully knocked out by an anesthesiologist and my terrific Dr. Soraya Ross inserts a long instrument down your throat with a camera on the end so they can have a look around your intestines.
Of course this interruption in my daily routine pisses me off, especially because today was a running at the beach day and I cherish that time. I've got lots of miles to get under my feet if I'm going to run that marathon next year.
The test showed progressed Gastritis, and in non doctor speak that means they now have turned into ulcers! Ahh, that explains the pain I've been in. With some medication I should be feeling better in a few days. In the meantime, I have a wonderful present being delivered shortly. My son Brandon is returning from his first year of college tonight! So while I'm not feeling my peppy self at the moment, knowing that he'll be back in the house for the summer and my family unit will be complete, helps lessen the pain.
Since Brian is out of town, I relied on my gal pals today who helped get me
to the surgical center and back home and my niece Olivia for picking up the crazy teenagers from school for me ... and to my Blog sister and much more Robin Sax for the EXQUISITE floral bouquet that I received upon my return today! Wow... purple and yellow tulips can always put a smile on your face. Well, life is never dull that's for sure.

Day 23: Sisteromics
I attended the most invigorating gathering this morning with powerful & inspiring women! I was invited to speak with leaders, members and potential recruits about the benefits of being a member of the National Women's Political Caucus. Always one of my favorite topics -- how to get more women elected to public office! I have been a member and part of the leadership of the LA Westside chapter of NWPC for a dozen years and I am always excited to meet a woman who has made the decision to run for office. It never gets old for me. This morning was no exception. Pictured here from left to right are four NWPC leaders. Stephanie Molen, Field Deputy for State Senator Fran Pavley, Lindsay Bubar, Co-President of NWPC LA Westside, Betsy Johnson, Co-President NWPC LA Westside, and Lindsey Horvath, West Hollywood City Councilwoman.
o heard from a current NWPC endorsed candidate - Holly J. Mitchell who is running for the 47th Assembly District (pictured right). The election is June 8th. She is running in my assembly district and I encourage all my followers & readers who reside in Beverlywood or anywhere in the 47th to support Holly. I invite you to check out Holly's credentials and you'll see why I am supporting her! http://www.hollyjmitchell.com/ Monday, May 10, 2010
Day 22: The Best Presents
Happy Mother's Day. I love you so much and want to remind you that you have been a great influence in my life. I can't wait to see you and catch up about everything. But most importantly I wanted to remind you that you are very much a mother to me. You have been there through thick and thin. I couldn't have made it this far without you. I appreciate all you have provided me with and want you to know how much I love you. Happy Mothers Day. You are a great mom, who inspires me to be everything I can be.
I love you, Zoe (age 18)
You are the best person ever. I love you so much. You are like a friend, s
ister and a mom. Whenever my family is down you help us, you are always there for us. I love coming over to watch TV. It is so funny when you yell at the TV. Sometimes I don't know were to begin because you are such a great person. I love the perfume you wear too. I love you! Happy Mother's Day.And from another special young woman in my life, my son Brandon's girlfriend:
Have a great day. You are such a loving, caring, beautiful, and AWESOME mother!!! I don't think the boys could ask for a better mom than you. Thank you very much for caring for me and taking me in as a daughter. You have done so much for me and I appreciate every little thing;I know I couldn't ask for anyone better than you. Day 20 & 21: Appreciate Motherhood
Happy Mommy's Day ! Ahh the Hallmark Holiday is here! While I find it a little silly that we have a special day dedicated to honoring Mom's, I must say I do like to be pampered all day long! It makes up (just a little) for all the days that we feel we are not appreciated for the work we do. And it is work, with no days off.Mother's Day is a bittersweet day for me. I am blessed to have my 3 delicious sons and am honored to be called Mom by them, but I do not have a Mom to say Happy Mom's Day to. To all my sisters who have lost their Mommy's way too early, I share your pain & loss.
I also hold a place in my heart for Mom's who have lost their children. I can't imagine the hole in their heart. I really can't. I think about the young Lacrosse pla
yer at the University of Virginia who was murdered this past week by an enraged boyfriend; her mother will spend this day without her daughter. Or the young Chelsea King from San Diego who was killed by a monster. How does her mom spend this day? My heart aches thinking about this. And all the Moms here in our own city who have lost their babies to gang violence. How do they celebrate today? Or the young pregnant woman who just blocks from my house was gunned down this past week while standing on the sidewalk. No doubt her Mom grieves today for her daughter and her grandbaby.
if you are annoyed by your teenagers attitude, or their poor grades, or if your toddler has thrown one too many tantrums for you to handle, or your kid didn't clean his room up, take a moment to pause and appreciate how blessed you are to be a Mom, despite all the imperfections your children may have. None of us are perfect. We all have flaws and children are no different. But can you imagine life without them? Without someone on this earth calling you Mom or Mommy or Mama? I can't imagine my life without hearing those words. I wear that title with honor & pride.Friday, May 7, 2010
Day 18 & 19: What's Going On?
I don't know if there is something in the air or what, but too many people I love are having health challenges that are unexplained! Many of you have been following my sister Michele's dilemma with her neck and I so appreciate your concern and healing thoughts for her. As of today the diagnosis is still unknown. After 4 days in the hospital, endless pain medication & antibiotics we still don't know what she has and what the best course of action should be. Next week will bring more tests and hopefully some answers to what led to her severe neck pain. To be continued.
ur health is so vital and when we are not feeling our optimum, life is just not fun and can be very scary. I love all these strong, beautiful women and am so sad that they are having to deal with these health issues. Wednesday, May 5, 2010
Day 17: Run Robyn Run !!!
Don't worry it's not running for political office again! It's literally RUNNING! As one of my 49th to 50th year intentions I have committed to run a Marathon... that's 26.2 miles for those of you who just aren't sure how difficult this challenge is! And I'm not walking it! I've done that before when I participated in the FIRST Avon 3-Day Walk for Breast & Ovarian Cancer. It was a GREAT experience and we walked from Santa Barbara to Malibu... some 20 miles a day! Just an awesome experience!
rained through enormous pain. I had severe nerve damage resulting from a grueling 18 month political campaign and I've spent a year reducing those physical effects through regular exercise. Much appreciation and thanks go out to my atheltic trainer, Melody Roset (http://www.makotraining.com/), who beleived that despite my endless pain, I could accomplish this personal goal. Thank you Mel!
exercise. Again today I did a plank for 2 and a half minutes -- and if you think that's a piece of cake, I'll challenge you anytime as most folks can barely hold themselves up for 10 seconds! I've put my teenage boys to the test and I've won! Try it and you'll see what I mean. Tuesday, May 4, 2010
Day 16: I Have Haters! Hurray!
Chris Rock once said, "You know you made it when you have Haters!" and I know this all too well ... When I was running for City Council I am PROUD to share that I had MANY haters! But now that I am no longer a candidate, I still have people 'hating on' my success.... For example, Robin Sax totally hates me for how many followers I have on my newly launched Blog ... She's so jealous! CLICK HERE TO VIEW! I gotta admit, I love it!! Monday, May 3, 2010
Day 14 & 15: Erasing the Stigma
On Friday I attended the annual Erasing the Stigma fundraiser produced by Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services. I always leave this event inspired by remarkable people who have overcome great odds to make significant contributions. And I am uplifted by the folks who perform outstanding work to help erase the stigma of mental illness. It's always fascinating when the Emcee asks who in the audience knows a person suffering from mental illness and every attendee stands! The truth is we are all affected by those we love who are challenged by their illness.
experience led Alison Malmon, a college freshman at the time of her brothers suicide to launch an organization committed to young people. Active Minds encourages young adults to talk about what's going on in their lives. Active Minds is committed to talking about suicide and erasing the stigma of mental illness. If young adults are ashamed to talk about how they are feeling they won't seek help.
er been to a charity fundraiser before. She is an inspiration in her own right as a Teen Line Counselor and Camp Harmony mentor. Teen Line is a program offered at Cedars Sinai Medical Center where teenagers are trained to field calls from their peers who are challenged by a host of issues ranging from conflicts with their parents, to child abuse, to their sexual identity, and yes thoughts of suicide. Thank goodness young people like Olivia give of their time to talk to other young people going through a difficult time. And a big shout out to Cheri Yousem who dedicates her time & energy and has for many years to the Didi Hirsch organization and its important mission. She co-chaired this year's event and it was inspirational.Friday, April 30, 2010
Day 11 -13: My Sis Is Not Doin' Well
Tuesday, April 27, 2010
Day 9 & 10: 30 Years Later on the Pitcher's Mound
Some moments can't be visualized until they really happen. That was the case yesterday. As many of you know Brian and I attended the same High School here in Los Angeles - University High School. Many of you also know that Brian was a baseball player and all 3 of our sons have followed him and his love for the game. I remember sitting in the bleachers 30 years ago watching my afro haired boyfriend heave the ball from the pitcher's mound... yesterday 3 decades later I sat in the same bleachers and watched Harrison & Spencer, my twin 14 year old sons stand on the same field hitting & heaving the ball. Wow! Talk about a whirlwind of memories and emotion.
tion. Here I am in the same town I grew up in, raising my family in the same neighborhood and my boys are visiting my almamater playing on the same field that I watched my boyfriend play on 3 decades ago. If that doesn't give you pause, not sure what will! Sunday, April 25, 2010
Day 8: Recycable Bags & Everything Else!
Am I the only one that feels guilty when I forget to bring my recyclable grocery bags to the market? Even with the best of intentions of always putting the bags back in the car after I've unloaded the groceries, somehow I keep forgetting! Or how about when I forget to floss every morning & evening. Or when I don't remember to do my keigle exercises. Is it just me or is the up keep to get through the day becoming just too damn much!Don't forget to brush & floss. Don't forget to use your eye cream and nighttime moisturizer. And are you exercising everyday? A recent report said women over 40 need to get 30 minutes of cardio workout daily just to maintain. Shit I don't want to maintain I want to keep improving. And then there's the twice yearly paps smear exam -- always a highlight of the year. And the yearly mammogram, and the dental visits so my teeth don't fall out, and the manicures & pedicures, and the facials if you're lucky to have the time & funds. Then there's the hair grooming maintenance. I've way passed color & cuts and now have low lights & highlights, and extensions! And then there's the eyebrows. Not just waxing because when you are as light haired as I am you also have to color your eyebrows & eyelashes. Oh my gosh I'm exhausted reading this post myself. I have not even touched on clothes, shoes and accessories that we are required to keep up with. Spring is here and summer is coming ... do you have your summer wardrobe... and how about the bikini bod to go with it!
And then there's the charity work we all want to do for our children's school, our churches & synagogues, our neighborhoods. You feel guilty again if you're not doing it just like those market recyclable bags! Then there's thank you notes to write, and phone calls to check in on all the relatives, and if you know me, you know that's a lot of calls for me to make in a week! And you want to eat healthy so there's the constant attention to buying green & lean and trying to cook meals that please everyone in the house while still aiming to eat good. There's birthday parties to plan & attend, and RSVP response cards to return (hopefully in a timely fashion). There's relationships to maintain be it friends, spouses, partners, parents, siblings, children, co-workers - they all require attention. The family pet too needs grooming and nails clipped!
And how is it that technology has made life easier? Yes we can check our emails & texts while on the road, but that means we need to check them and respond. Another task. And if you FaceBook, Twitter, or Blog in the cyber world there's that to maintain daily too! I have not even mentioned a paying gig -- this is all what has to be done before we step into the office -- whether your office is a cubicle or a corner view, or your lap top in the coffee joint, it's all work and it's a demand!
I used to say I was tired the minute my feet hit the carpet in the morning just thinking about all that had to be accomplished in a day. That still hasn't changed. I feel that the demand to look as good as we want to look takes endless energy and now we also have to remember those damn recyclable grocery bags!
Are we tired yet?

Day 7: Hot Women Kicked Out of Dive Bar
Now keep in mind that the average age of the patrons at this place is boarding on 80, so yeah I guess having hot 40 year old women boozing it up would add a little too much color to the joint! Well you can imagine my aghast when my sister Michele called me to say "we are not invited to

PS: So if you are as outraged as we are please ban Billingsley's and join us at our new favorite watering hole THE BUGGY WHIP ... it's classic old school just the way I like to live it up!
PSS: We have video of our dancing escapades which I'll put up in my next post!

Day 5 & 6: Your Thoughts ... Thank You !
Wow... I never knew that writing a Birthday Blog would inspire so many people to reflect on their own lives! I want to thank you for all the poignant messages you sent about age, life and happiness. When you launch a new project you are not always sure what the reception will be, but I am overwhelmed with how generous people have been with their thoughts! Like these words of encouragement from my dear friend Pam:
Dear Robbie, Happy Birthday my young friend! Fantastic idea to find, feel, express & share those ever so unbelievably thoughts that travel, wonder & take us down that path we call life! I look forward to reading your blog in hopes you can shed some light on my path. It is so bumpy lately (very bumpy)! Loved the movie Julia & Julie! Love, you too!
This space is an outlet for my followers & friends to express what's on their mind resulting in the most insightful thoughts! Something about birthdays that make people take stock in their lives ... where they have been the past year, where they are heading in the coming year... disappointments & successes ... New Year's is similar, however, that's when everyone is experiencing self reflection , a birthday is just for you, it's personal and it also adds another year on to your age which can jolt the best of us. If your thoughts are any indication of what lies ahead for me, I'm in for a good ride this year! Keep the inspirational thoughts coming!

Day 4: What Do Boobs Really Mean to Women?

I am getting my implant out tomorrow, and my breast will just be one deflated piece of skin with a nipple still attached, thank G-d they can save the nipple, until the tissue heals in about a year. At that time I will get both implants redone, G-d willing. Which brings me to this ... Take some sexy pictures of yourself showing off your breasts - they are such a beautiful thing on a woman's body and I think its something we take for granted. They will never look as good as they do right now because gravitation takes place every day - hide the pictures in a safe place just for your own keeping, maybe share them with your husband or significant other. I kept trying to find a camera with a remote before I started radiation to do the same and never could. I wanted to take some photos, not only for me, but for Steve too because he is such a tit man. Now, for the next year, I will be having sex while in a Fredrick's of Hollywood or Victoria Secrets outfit to hide my boob. I know it could be so much worse, believe me. So, remember to do this. Robyn, make this a birthday present to yourself - seriously!
My dear Friend YES I will make this a Birthday present to cherish my body, my friends and their boobs and realize that a little sagging is far better then cancer and the pain my friend is going through ...

Day 2 & 3: Martini's in Manhattan

We had a few glitches with the Blog, which is why a post didn't go up yesterday, but all should be up and running smoothly now! Below is yesterday's post .... I'll be posting more than once today to make up for lost time :)
Wow! What an adventure I had in New York visiting the kid sister Jennifer! Have not been to the Big Apple in some 13 years and even then I was tugging along 3 toddlers and not really able to absorb the shopping & eating side of such a rich city! Sister was a GREAT host & tour guide and my gal pal Lisa and I didn't leave a Chanel store undiscovered. Same for all the great shoe departments New York has to offer. What is it about shopping for handbags & shoes!?! And wow did we eat! The food was DELICIOUS! I could write an entire blog on the restaurants we visited and the meals we ate ... and of course the Martini's !
p.s. Better photos to come! This one is a little grainy but it was the end of the Birthday night (in the limo) celebration. And since gal-pal Lisa lost her camera (with the GREAT photos, in a taxi in NY) my sister Jennifer had to take this with her cell ... oh well!
More later ...

My Birthday April 17, 2010
2. Attend Law School
3. Finish My Book
4. Be A Political Reporter (again!)
5. Be As Physically Fit & Healthy As Possible
note: I would say "Own at least one handbag from all my favorite designers" however, I am aiming to be more spiritual with my top five goals - haha!
But for today, I am in New York City with my kid sister (Jennifer) and wonderful friend (Lisa) about to embrace all that Manhattan has to offer -- including good coffee to start the day! Here is to a fabulous year ahead!
